Stoicism

Providence and Fate

Everything that happens is determined by the rational will of the cosmos; what seems evil is part of a larger providential order.

Stoics believed in providence (pronoia) — the rational governance of all events by the cosmic logos. What appears evil or unjust is necessary for the functioning of the whole. This is not naive optimism but a metaphysical framework that makes acceptance rational: the universe is always proceeding as it must.

Everything harmonizes with me, which is harmonious to thee, O Universe.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 4

Stoic providence raised the problem of evil in a new form, generating debates that influenced later Neoplatonist and Christian theodicy.
