Cosmic Citizenship
Every human being is a citizen of the cosmos before being a citizen of any particular city or nation.
The Stoic concept of cosmopolitanism holds that rational beings belong first to the universal community of reason and only secondarily to particular political communities. Diogenes the Cynic said he was 'a citizen of the world'; the Stoics systematized this into a philosophical doctrine that underpins universal human dignity.
We are all fellow-citizens of one great city.
Stoic cosmopolitanism directly influenced the development of natural law theory, international law, and modern human rights discourse.
