Stoicism

The Sympathy of the Whole

All things in the cosmos are interconnected; what affects one part affects the whole, creating mutual sympathy among all beings.

Stoics taught that the cosmic logos creates a universal sympathy (sympatheia) among all things. Events ripple through the whole. This interconnection grounds both the Stoic concern for others and the acceptance of circumstances: because all is connected, nothing is truly isolated or without meaning in the whole.

All things are woven together and the common bond is sacred.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 7

Sympatheia anticipates systems thinking, ecology, and quantum entanglement as frameworks for understanding universal interconnection.
