Stoicism

Honoring Relationships

Friendship, family bonds, and civic relationships are natural goods that the Stoic honors while remaining unattached to specific outcomes.

Stoics valued deep friendships and family bonds as natural goods, even while acknowledging they are 'preferred indifferents.' The Stoic is a devoted parent, loyal friend, and trustworthy colleague — but without the possessive anxiety that turns love into a source of suffering. Attachment is replaced by genuine, unclinging care.

Treat everyone as if they are your brother or sister.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 6

Stoic relationship ethics balances genuine warmth and attachment against the equanimity required by the dichotomy of control.
