Stoicism

Natural Law

There is a universal moral law grounded in reason that transcends human legislation and applies to all rational beings.

Stoics developed the concept of natural law (jus naturale) — moral principles discoverable by reason, applicable to all humans regardless of nationality or culture. This concept profoundly influenced Roman law, Christian natural law theory, and eventually the founding documents of modern democracies.

True law is right reason in agreement with nature.

Cicero, De Re Publica, 3.22

Stoic natural law theory is the direct ancestor of the natural rights tradition that grounds modern constitutionalism and international law.
