Three Marks of Existence - Impermanence

All conditioned phenomena are impermanent and constantly changing.

Anicca (impermanence) reveals that all conditioned things arise, persist for a time, and pass away. Understanding impermanence deeply leads to letting go of attachment and awakening.

Everything changes, nothing remains without change.

Buddha, Mahaparinibbana Sutta

Contemplating impermanence develops wisdom and non-attachment.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about grief

Anicca holds that every conditioned thing arises, persists for a time, and passes away, and the Mahaparinibbana Sutta applies this to the Buddha's own dying body. Grief, on this view, is not a malfunction; it is what happens when a mind built on permanence meets a world that has none.
