Mudita - Sympathetic Joy

Rejoicing in the happiness and success of others.

Mudita is the antidote to jealousy and envy. By genuinely delighting in others' good fortune, we multiply our own happiness and create causes for future joy.

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Buddha, Traditional Teaching

Mudita transforms jealousy into a source of abundant happiness.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about compassion

Gladness at someone else's good fortune. It is offered as the specific antidote to envy, which is the nearest failure to hand.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about envy and comparison

Mudita is named directly as the antidote to jealousy: deliberate delight in another's good fortune, practised as a trainable skill rather than waited for as a mood. The claim attached to it is that such delight multiplies your own happiness rather than spending it, and the image given is a candle from which thousands can be lit without its own life being shortened.
