Divine Love — The Ground From Which All Love Flows

Divine Love — the infinite, unconditional love that is the nature of ultimate reality — is recognized across all traditions as the source from which all human love flows and the destination toward which all genuine loving points.

The Sufi tradition's identification of al-Mahabbah (divine love) as the highest reality and the mystical path of the heart places love at the very center of Islamic spirituality. The Christian declaration 'God is love' (1 John 4:8) is the most compact theological statement of the same recognition. The Bhakti Yoga tradition's teaching that Prema (divine love) is both the path and the goal — that the devotee's love for God and God's love for the devotee are aspects of the same single love — is a non-dual understanding of love as the nature of ultimate reality. The Buddhist teaching of Mahakaruna (great compassion) as the compassion of the Buddhas extended equally to all sentient beings reflects the same universal lovingness. What is universally recognized is that genuine human love — at its deepest, when it transcends personal preference and ego-need — is not human love at all but the same divine love that sustains all existence, briefly recognized through the temporary medium of a human relationship.

God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in them.

1 John, 1 John 4:16

Philosopher Andrew Harvey's documentation of mystical love experiences across 12 traditions in The Direct Path identifies a common phenomenology: in the most intense moments of mystical love, the distinction between the lover, the beloved, and the love itself dissolves into a single undivided experience — confirming the Sufi teaching that divine love is the nature of ultimate reality rather than an attribute it possesses.
