The Eternal Soul — Consciousness That Transcends Death

The universal recognition of an element of human consciousness that transcends physical death — variously named the Soul, Atman, Jiva, Ruach, Nafs — is one of the most widely held spiritual beliefs in human history.

The recognition that human consciousness is not reducible to the physical body — that there is an element of the person that was before birth and continues after death — appears in virtually every known human culture across all periods of recorded history. The Hindu-Yogic Atman (the individual Self identical with universal Brahman), the Jiva (the individual soul moving through successive incarnations), the Christian Soul (created by God, surviving death, responsible before God), the Islamic Nafs (soul or self, existing before body and continuing after death), the Jewish Neshamah (the divine breath animating the person), the Buddhist stream-of-consciousness that continues across rebirths. While the specific metaphysical claims differ enormously between traditions, the common recognition is that what experiences, loves, knows, and chooses is not reducible to a physical process — and that the question of what persists beyond the death of the body is among the most important questions a human being can engage.

I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Woody Allen, Without Feathers

Near-death experience researcher Pim Van Lommel's prospective study of 344 cardiac arrest patients documented that 18% reported conscious experiences during periods when their brains showed no measurable activity — providing the most scientifically rigorous data yet for the possibility that consciousness can exist independently of brain function.
