Viveka - Discrimination
Distinguishing the real from the unreal.
Viveka is the capacity to discriminate between the eternal Self and the temporary not-self. This faculty, developed through study and reflection, leads to liberation.
Discrimination between the real and the unreal is the first qualification.
Viveka is the essential faculty for spiritual progress.

Viveka is telling the lasting from the passing. The later manuals put it first, because letting go without it is just loss.
- What the Upanishads say about doubt
Viveka is the trained ability to tell the lasting from the passing, and Shankara lists it as the first qualification, ahead of dispassion. Doubt here is not to be removed but aimed: you are meant to disbelieve most of what you experience.
