Vairagya - Dispassion
Non-attachment to worldly pleasures and objects.
Vairagya is the natural result of viveka - when one sees the transient nature of worldly things, attachment naturally loosens, freeing energy for self-inquiry.
When attachment to sense objects fades, the mind becomes fit for knowledge.
Dispassion is not suppression but natural outgrowing.

- What the Upanishads say about letting go
Dispassion, in this account, is not forced. It is what happens to attachment once the temporariness of the thing has actually been seen.
- What the Upanishads say about grief
Dispassion is described as what follows naturally from seeing how transient things are — an outgrowing, not a suppression. Said to someone three weeks into a loss it sounds cold, and there is no softer version on offer: the claim is that attachment loosens by itself once the seeing is real, and not before.
