The Upanishads

The Honey Doctrine

All is connected like honey in the honeycomb.

The Madhu Vidya (Honey Doctrine) teaches that just as bees create honey from many flowers, all beings and elements are interconnected, each containing and supporting all others.

This earth is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this earth.

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.5.1

The honey doctrine reveals mutual dependence in creation.

  • What the Upanishads say about loneliness

This earth is honey for all beings, and all beings are honey for this earth. The Madhu Vidya makes belonging structural rather than affectionate: on this account you are not connected to others because they chose you.
