Bahá'í Faith

Equality of Women and Men

Women and men are equal in the sight of God; the full participation of women in all spheres of human life is essential to peace.

Bahá'u'lláh proclaimed the equality of women and men — a radical teaching in the 19th century Middle East where the Faith emerged. Abdu'l-Bahá extended this, teaching that humanity cannot achieve its full potential until women participate fully in all domains of life. If women are valued equally in education, governance, and work, society will be transformed.

Women and men have been and will always be equal in the sight of God.

Bahá'u'lláh, Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh

The Bahá'í gender equality teaching predates most women's rights movements by decades and remains distinctive in its integration into a religious framework.

Women and men are held to be equal in the sight of God, and women's full participation in every sphere is described as necessary to peace rather than as a desirable extra.
