The Secret Place of Prayer
Private prayer with the Father is more valuable than public religious display.
Jesus warns against praying 'to be seen by others' and instructs, 'When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.' The emphasis is on authentic communion with God rather than performance for human approval. The 'secret place' is wherever we are alone with God. Private prayer shapes public character. God who sees in secret rewards openly. This teaching does not forbid public prayer but condemns hypocrisy that uses prayer for reputation. True prayer seeks audience with God alone.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.
Andrew Murray taught that 'the value of secret prayer depends on whether we use it in the right spirit'—seeking God, not recognition.
