Hermeticism

The Principle of Cause and Effect

Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause.

The sixth Hermetic principle declares that nothing happens by chance. Every effect has its cause, every cause produces its effect. This chain of causation extends infinitely in all directions. Understanding causation allows the adept to become a causer rather than merely an effect.

Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law.

The Kybalion, The Kybalion, Chapter XII

Understanding causation empowers conscious creation rather than passive reception.

The Kybalion

Written about in

  • What Hermeticism says about the pattern in things

Nothing is put down to chance. Every effect is held to have its cause, and the chain is said to run on indefinitely in both directions.

  • What Hermeticism says about failure

Here the tradition turns cold. Nothing happens by chance, so your failure had causes, including ones you set running and never examined. This is the concept most easily misread as blame, and hermeticism does not soften it.
