Sujud - The Prostration

The physical and spiritual prostration that represents the closest point to Allah.

Sujud (السجود) is prostration—the position where forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes touch the ground. The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'The closest a servant is to their Lord is when they are in prostration.' Sujud represents complete submission—the highest part of the body (the head) is lowered to the ground before Allah. It is where du'a is especially accepted. Some prostrations are obligatory (in prayer), while prostration of gratitude (sujud al-shukr) and prostration during Quran recitation are recommended. Sujud connects the spiritual and physical in profound humility.

The closest a servant is to their Lord is when they are in prostration, so increase your supplications therein.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 482

The Prophet (PBUH) described how on the Day of Judgment, believers will be recognized by the marks of sujud on their faces—the physical sign of their spiritual practice.
