I'tikaf - Spiritual Retreat
The practice of seclusion in the mosque for intensive worship and reflection.
I'tikaf (الإعتكاف) is spiritual retreat—secluding oneself in the mosque for worship, particularly during the last ten nights of Ramadan. The Prophet (PBUH) practiced i'tikaf annually, seeking Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power). During i'tikaf, one stays in the mosque continuously, leaving only for essential needs. This practice creates an intensive spiritual experience, removing worldly distractions and focusing entirely on worship. I'tikaf can be for days or even hours, making it accessible to many. It revitalizes spiritual practice and creates special connection with Allah.
And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, saying, 'Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying for worship.'
Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet never missed i'tikaf during Ramadan until his passing, and after him, his wives continued this practice.
