Mayan Wisdom

Limits of Human Knowledge

Acknowledging what humans cannot fully understand.

Some things are beyond human comprehension. The first humans created from corn could see everything, so the gods clouded their vision. We see partially, know partially. Humility before mystery is appropriate; pretending to know everything is hubris.

We see as far as the gods allow, and no further.

Traditional, Popol Vuh

Knowledge limits teaching balances pursuit of wisdom with epistemological humility.

  • What the Maya tradition says about grief

The first maize humans could see everything, so the gods clouded their sight; we see only partly. The tradition therefore does not explain your particular death to you, and treats the demand for a full explanation as hubris.
