Narada Bhakti Sutras

Love of God's Beauty

The second form is devotion enchanted by the beauty and sweetness of the Divine, especially in personal, loving forms.

Rupa-asakti is love drawn by the beauty of the beloved's form — the enchanting figure of Krishna, the radiant face of the Divine in any cherished image. Where glory inspires awe, beauty inspires tenderness and delight; the devotee is captivated, as Mirabai was by the beauty of her dark Lord. This form recognizes that the Divine, though formless, lovingly assumes form to be enjoyed and adored by the heart that cannot love an abstraction. Contemplating divine beauty refines the aesthetic sense into a spiritual faculty, teaching the soul to see all beauty as a reflection of the one Beautiful. The beauty-loving devotee worships through wonder and delight. In the beloved's form, the infinite becomes near, dear, and embraceable.

Some love Him through devotion to the beauty of His form.

Narada, Narada Bhakti Sutras, Sutra 82

The devotional love of divine beauty resonates with the Platonic ascent in the Symposium, where love of beautiful forms leads upward to the love of Beauty itself, and with the Eastern Orthodox theology of the icon as a window to the divine.
