The Two Truths

Conventional truth and ultimate truth coexist non-contradictorily.

The Two Truths doctrine explains how emptiness and appearance coexist. Conventionally, phenomena appear and function. Ultimately, they lack inherent existence. Both truths are true - they complement rather than contradict.

Those who do not understand the distinction between these two truths do not understand the Buddha's profound teaching.

Nagarjuna, Mulamadhyamakakarika

The two truths framework prevents misunderstanding emptiness as nihilism.
